Musicoz Success Story: Porcelain
Emotional, melodic, dynamic, and powerful are words that come to mind when introduced to the band Porcelain. Porcelain has a unique lineup and an original sound; based on the dynamic vocals of female front Lo Roberts, the powerful melodic guitars of Ben Richards, the emotional layers of violinist Asha Mevlana and the strength of rhythm section Ewen Penberthy-Groves (Bass) and Ritchie Schafe (Drums).
Porcelain formed in 1999 in Wollongong, just outside of Sydney Australia, by songwriting duo Lo and Ben who had performed together in a big-band during high school (Lo singing, Ben on trumpet). Originally an acoustic duo, the band soon expanded to include a rhythm section including Ewen (who had played Sax in the big band), Ritchie (who attended Lo's high school) and Nadege De Vet on violin.
Over the next 2 years, Porcelain rose to the top of their local scene, winning a National Musicoz Award and later gaining a spot on the M-One tour with the Goo Goo Dolls, Simple Plan, Nickelback, Garbage and Lifehouse. An industry buzz attracted a bidding war from Sony Records and Wizard Records, and in 2003 Porcelain elected to sign with Wizard, an independent label who had a more immediate focus on the U.S market.
In 2003 the band relocated to Los Angeles and began to build a name by sustaining residencies at multiple venues including the Viper Room. Performing over 100 shows in 2003 the majority being showcases on Sunset Strip, the band developed their live show and local fan base, attracting interest from Universal Records, Dreamworks, Maverick Records and local press…"Porcelain...a dizzying on-stage array...Porcelain's estimable range...is at once buoyant and mesmerizing..." "Time to add some Porcelain to your collection... Singer Lo Roberts...flaunts a natural stage presence not a million miles removed from that of Gwen Stefani, and easily lures listeners into her complex, occasionally confrontational world. Porcelain isn't like many other bands out there. That's what makes it so valuable," Dean Goodman (Editor)/REUTERS Entertainment Review USA.
In 2005, Porcelain signed directly to Universal/Motown Records, Nadege De Vet moved back to Australia and the band found Asha Mevlana wielding her 7-string electric violin (originally from Boston, who has performed with Gnarles Barkley), to give Porcelain an international line-up. The band spent 2006 writing and recording their debut album, and these sessions have included working with Linda Perry (4 Non-Blondes,Pink, Gwen Stefani), Mike Elizondo (Maroon 5, Fiona Apple), Holly Knight (Aerosmith, Pat Benatar), Mike Chapman (Blondie) and Mike Green (Yellowcard). Porcelain’s record was mixed by Serban Ghenea (Kelly Clarkson, Dave Matthews Band), and Justin Niebank (Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban).
Porcelain is a truly original band with great songs and amazing stage presence - far removed from the actor/singer genre in today’s industry –with a live show worthy of arena sized crowds. This is a band that would not be out of place touring with the likes of U2, Coldplay or Dave Matthew's Band.
“Since winning a Musicoz Award we’ve been signed in Australia and in the U.S and we can’t thank the team at Musicoz enough for the opportunities we received. They are totally dedicated to helping independent artists get out there.” (Porcelain)
